Abstract

Born and raised in the West Colfax neighborhood, Leonard Alterman excelled at basketball in both AAU and at North High School. Alterman parleyed this success into a scholarship at the University of Denver, and after service in WW2, a short career with the old Denver Nuggets in the NBA's predecessor league, the National Basketball League.

Abstract

Herb Galchinsky was born in 1937. He was coached by Shelly Silverman, when he was playing at the Young America League at the JCC. He also played on his high school team at north high school. After high school he attended University of Denver, Law School on an academic scholarship which was converted to a full ride athletics scholarship. He was the captain of his team, his senior year. after he went on to being a judge. he also coached the little League baseball.

Abstract Joe 'Awful' Coffee, born Joseph Rutkowski in Minsk, Russian Empire in 1905 was a major figure on the Denver sports scene. After boxing, as a featherweight, for ten years across the Rocky Mountain region, he retired and went to college at the University of Denver. After graduation, Joe worked for the May Company, and then opened up Joe 'Awful' Coffee's Ringside Lounge in 1943. Abstract

Sam Sugarman starred in football with the now-defunct University of Denver program in the late 1930s, earning all-American honors twice and earning headlines for sitting out a game that was scheduled on Yom Kippur in 1940 for religious reasons. After graduation, he turned down an offer to play with the Newark Bears, joined the military and played semi-pro football with a team in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sugarman retired from playing in 1944.

Bill 'Willie' Winograd, a native of Denver, starred in football at both La Junta High School and the University of Denver in the late 1920s, earning the captaincy of the DU squad in 1931. Due to his small stature, he never played professionally, but ran a furniture business on the Front Range for nearly 50 years.
